How Long Does A Gaming Headset Last?

Gaming headsets heavily influence the atmosphere and overall gaming experience, so getting one with good quality is crucial. However, like any other equipment, they also break after some time. So, how long does a gaming headset last?

Modern gaming headsets last anywhere between 2-5 years. Less expensive models tend to break faster compared to more expensive versions. With proper care and cleaning, gaming headsets can last up to 7 years or more.

Over the years, I owned a couple of headsets from different brands, but the Logitech G35 lasted seven years before I replaced it with the Steelseries Arctis 7. The reason for a replacement was not that the G35 stopped working; I rather wanted to switch to a wireless headset.

Factors That Influence the Lifespan of a Gaming Headset

Headsets are made out of many different parts and materials, which heavily influence the product’s lifespan. Generally, the price you pay for a headset reflects the quality of the product, so models for $10-$30 probably won’t last as long as models for $80-$140.

There are a few different factors that influence how long a headset will ultimately last, such as:

  • Materials: Most gaming headsets are made out of plastic materials and different metals. High-end headsets feature more durable materials on the headband, earcups, earpads, and more.
  • Speaker Drivers Quality:  Headset drivers generally last a long time, but cheaper drivers tend to break faster, resulting in a decreased lifespan. Still, drivers can stop working if the headset falls from greater heights or if it gets punched or thrown across the room.
  • Cables: A common reason why headsets stop working is that the connection wire breaks because you roll over it with your chair too often. Low budget headsets use less durable cables, which tend to break easier.

How Often Should I Replace My Gaming Headset?

Every new year, brands like Razer, Steelseries, Logitech, or Corsair release new versions of their gaming headsets, ranging from $50 up to $150 or more. However, as gaming headsets tend to last a few years, how often should you replace yours?

Generally, you should replace your gaming headset at the point where it breaks, or you do want to upgrade to a different model with more features. Purchasing a new headset while the current model still works is only recommended if you want to have one for spare.

Why Do Gaming Headsets Break So Easily?

Gaming headsets are delicate device with lots of different components, which wear down over time. With proper care and cleaning, you can extend the lifespan of your gaming headset, but in the end, they will break at some point.

Here are a few reasons why your gaming headset breaks so easily, such as:

  • Rolling over the cord: The cord contains a wire, which allows you to connect the headset with your PC and console. Such cords are usually quite long, ranging up to 10 feet. Rolling over them a couple of times can cause the wire to break, so signals can no longer be transferred.
  • Snapping the wires: If you forget to put the headset down before standing up and going out of the room, you put a lot of tension on the internal wires. This force can pull wires out of their connection points, causing the entire headset to stop working.
  • Pulling on the cord: Pulling one the cable and not on the plug can cause wires to be pulled out of their connection spots or cause them to break.
  • Winding the cord: Winding the cord or making a knot can cause the cable to break in multiple areas. Instead, roll them up and fixate them with a pair of zip ties.
